Having a clogged drain is an annoyance that most people do not need in their life. The good news is that most clogged drains can be fixed without the need for a plumber. Depending on the severity of the clogged drain, there are a few different methods you can try to solve the problem.

If you have a drain that is not fully clogged but is draining slowing than normal, a good way to help open the drain up is vinegar and baking soda. The essentially, this method requires you to heat up some water and pour it into your drain. Add 1/4 of a cup of baking soda to the drain. Next, you would add one cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit in the drain for 20 minutes before you flush it with hot water.

The next method to use for clogged drains is using a wire clothes hanger to pull the clog out of the drain. To begin with, you'll want to straighten out a metal clothes hanger but remember to leave the hook at the end. After you've gotten the hanger straightened out, you'll want to remove any drain covers that you may have. After the cover has removed, push the hanger down the drain until you feel resistance. Once you're at the point of resistance, push and pull the hanger down and up about five times. Once you've done this, pull the hanger out completely. If it worked, you'll see the clog at the end of the hanger. If you do not see the clog, you can repeat this method.

If your clogged drain is a clog that you know has come from grease buildup, a great way to break up the clog is mixing one-half cup of baking soda with one-half cup of salt. Once you have your mixture, pour it in the drain. Boil a bit of water and then pour it into the drain. This will help to make the grease go into a soft form to move the clog down the drain easier and unclog drain. Allow this mixture to sit overnight before flushing out the drain and testing the draining.

The methods above take almost no time to perform and can remove the clog quickly without you needing to spend a lot of money to have a plumber complete the job. Keep in mind that some clogs are more stubborn than others. Sometimes you will need to complete the methods multiple times, or try various methods to relieve the clog.
